Best areas to base a construction crew in South Wales

We operate two bases — Pentre in the Rhondda Valley and Plasmarl in Swansea — and which one suits your crew comes down almost entirely to where the work is.

The Valleys base — Pentre (A465/A470)

Pentre sits central to the Rhondda Fawr and Fach, with quick access to the A4058/A4119 down to Pontypridd and the A465/A470 across to Merthyr, Aberdare and the Heads of the Valleys works. Most valley and RCT sites are a short drive, so crews start fresh on site instead of commuting in from distant hotels.

Within reach

  • Pentre
  • Treorchy
  • Tonypandy
  • Porth
  • Pontypridd
  • Treforest
  • Aberdare
  • Merthyr Tydfil
  • Hirwaun

Projects driving demand here

  • A465 Heads of the Valleys dualling — Trunk-road upgrade and ongoing maintenance across the A465 / A470 corridor — site teams, supervisors and travelling trades on multi-month deployments minutes from Pentre.
  • South Wales Metro — Rail electrification and civils works across the valley lines, with crews moving between Pontypridd, Treforest and the Taff/Rhondda corridors.
  • Twyn Hywel Energy Park — Wind-farm civils on the RCT/Caerphilly boundary (access tracks, turbine foundations) — foundation gangs and supervisors needing settled medium-term digs.

The Swansea base — Plasmarl (M4)

Plasmarl sits just off the M4 (J45) and the A4067, so Port Talbot, Neath, Swansea Bay and routes west into Carmarthenshire are an easy drive. It's a practical base for crews working anywhere along the M4 corridor in the west.

Within reach

  • Plasmarl
  • Morriston
  • Llansamlet
  • Swansea city centre
  • Port Talbot
  • Neath
  • Briton Ferry
  • Baglan
  • Bridgend
  • Llanelli

Projects driving demand here

  • Port Talbot steelworks & decarbonisation — Major works at the Port Talbot site and supply chain — contractor and engineering teams needing medium-term accommodation a short hop up the M4.
  • Swansea Bay & city regeneration — Construction and infrastructure across Swansea Bay and the city — site teams and travelling trades on rolling deployments.
  • West Wales utility & infrastructure — Gas, water and power crews working west of Swansea who need a settled Monday–Friday or full-week base near the M4 corridor.

Parking & crew practicalities

Every Forest Home property has on-street parking right outside on a quiet residential street — no city-centre car park fees or hunting for a space after a late finish. Both bases sit on ordinary residential roads rather than town centres, which also means quieter streets for crews on early starts or, at 85 Llewellyn Street and 94 Ystrad Road in Pentre, night-shift sleep.

Matching a base to your project

If the work is anywhere across Rhondda Cynon Taf, the Heads of the Valleys corridor, or the South Wales Metro / valley rail lines, Pentre is the closer base. If the work is on the M4 corridor — Port Talbot, Neath, Swansea Bay or west towards Llanelli — Plasmarl in Swansea is the practical choice. 94 Ystrad Road: 3 bedrooms (includes 1 box room) · 3 beds · sleeps 3; 85 Llewellyn Street: 4 bedrooms · 7 beds · sleeps 7; 322 Neath Road: 2 bedrooms · 3 beds · sleeps 3.
