About the project
Tata Steel's £1.25bn decarbonisation of Port Talbot steelworks is building a new electric arc furnace, targeted to be operational in 2028 and producing around 3 million tonnes of steel a year. Sir Robert McAlpine is principal contractor for the main civil, structural and building works; Skanska is providing civil/structural design and project management from its Bridgend technology team. A genuinely multi-year build, not a short mobilisation — bringing groundworks, structural steel, M&E and specialist subcontractor teams to the area over several years. The same wider decarbonisation programme also includes Project Invictus (the Pickle Line), with contractor Morganstone appointed for civils and structural work — another live Port Talbot workstream drawing in outside teams alongside the electric arc furnace build.
